Welcome
to News Cozumel!
So much to cover and such little space! First, I want to tell you about
the origin of the Festival at El Cedral (April 29-May 3rd).
In 1847 the Mayan went to war in the Yucatán Peninsula, in what is
called the Castes War. Knowing that the Mayan where very close, Casimiro
Cárdenas and his companions took shelter in a church in the town of
Sabán.
When the Mayan attacked, the shelter proved to be useless, many died in
the attack. Casimiro was badly wounded and covered with blood; he held a
crucifix in his hand. In a moment of consciousness, he made the sacred
promise that if they ever reached a safe place to settle in for the rest
of their lives, they would hold a solemn service to honor the Holy Cross
every year.
The survivors of the attack continued their journey, among them the
young Casimiro. They eventually arrived in the island of Cozumel where
they founded the village of El Cedral over the ruins of the ancient
Mayan town of Oycib.
After settling, Casimiro fulfilled his promise and celebrated the first
service to honor the Holy Cross.
When Don Casimiro Cárdenas died, his wife continued the religious
festivities. Today their descendants, the Cárdenas Montero family, are
the keepers of the festivities of the Holy Cross of Sabán.
Years have passed and going to El Cedral with the family to celebrate
the holy cross has become a tradition. Today this festivity is the
oldest in the state with 162 years of celebration, interrupted only in
2009 because of the (H1N1) Flu scare.
In the year of 1975 the authorities agreed with the Cardenas family to
include not only religious festivities but commercial and recreational
events. Thus, now we have a Feria, or Fair.
Today the festivities at El Cedral include regional handicraft
exhibitions, horse races, rodeo, bull fights, rooster fights,
gastronomy, and many cultural events including the famous traditional
“Jarana” dancing contest, and the unique dance of the hog heads. This
year's musical line-up includes Aleks Synteks, Los Horóscopos de
Durango, and Reik.
Rodeo de
Lanchas 2010
This is the biggest fishing
contest in Mexico, and it takes place right here in Cozumel with
competitors coming from all over the world. The dates this year are May
14th-16th. Details can be found at
www.granslamdelcaribe.com/cozumel.html Entry appears to be $7,000
pesos and it looks like first prize is a Hummer, 2nd and 3rd prizes are
trucks and fourth prize is a car. A reported record number of
registrations have already been received, don’t miss out!
The 4th
Sacred Mayan Crossing is a reenactment of Mayan pilgrimages from
Xcaret (mainland) to the Island of Cozumel and back. This three day
event will take place the end of May. It was quite impressive in past
years, take your cameras!

A common misconception on this Island is that since we
are a small community, everyone knows what is going on. Many times I
find out about events after the fact, most of the time at the last
minute and too late to pass on the information to you.
I receive notices from the Cruz Roja Cozumel, Casa de
Cultura Cozumel, Woman’s Breakfast Club, and Game Night Club. Please
make certain I am on your mailing list and contact me for all special
events so I may better serve our community.
